Dominican Republic President Fernandez breaks ground for US$1.4B resort in Dominican east.

PUNTA CANA.- Venezuelan investors began yesterday in Altagracia province (east), construction of the tourist complex Vista Cana, Resort & Country Club, on six million square meters of land.

The complex will have 6,000 residences, a 100 room business hotel, a 27-hole golf course and a 180,000 square meter artificial lake integrated to the beach area, and built at a cost of arond 1.4 billion dollars.

President Leonel Fernandez and the project’s main promoter, Salvador Fermín headed the groundbreaking ceremony, with Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia also present.

According to the promoters, the facility will hire around 20,000 workers when concluded.

  • Hill International Receives Contract to Manage Construction of $6 Billion Resort

Hill International (HIL:6.14, -1.06, -14.7%) , the global leader in managing construction risk, announced today that it has received a contract from Grupo Angulo Abierto Internacional S.A. (AAI) to provide project management services for the new VistaCana Resort and Country Club, located in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The value of Hill's contract for Phase 1 of the project, which is anticipated to last three years, is estimated to be worth approximately $45.0 million.  VistaCana is the newest planned development in the popular resort destination of Punta Cana.

This 1,400-acre planned resort is located 10 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport and will be built-out in multiple phases. Phase 1 is valued at $1.2 billion and includes the construction of 1,366 residences (single family, assisted living and multi-family), as well as a 40-acre man-made lake, beach recreation areas and two island venues consisting of a luxury spa and a recreational island. Phases 2 through 7 will include a signature 27-hole golf course, two clubhouse/community centers, two hotels, various residences, ecotrails and an equestrian center. Total construction cost of the entire project is estimated at $6.0 billion.
"We are very excited to work with a development partner like AAI in creating an outstanding new community in the Dominican Republic," said Stuart S. Richter, Senior Vice President with Hill. "Over the next 10 years, this resort will be one of the most exciting projects developed in the Caribbean," Richter added.

LOCATION

The Dominican Republic is the eastern side of an island nation located approximately 2 hours (via plane) southeast of Miami, to the west of Cuba and Jamaica. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus (he called it Hispaniola), who described it as "a beautiful island paradise with high forested mountains and large river valleys." In the 1500s Spanish ships stopped in DR on their way to the American colonies, which attracted the attention of the original pirates of the Caribbean.
